Football used to be my escape. Every Sunday, I would tune in to watch the game, forgetting about the stresses of daily life. But in August 2016, everything changed. When Colin Kaepernick took the first knee during the national anthem, the sport I loved suddenly became a stage for political statements and virtue signaling. That moment marked the beginning of my gradual departure from football.

The Shift from Sport to Politics

I watched football to escape politics, not to be reminded of it. The kneeling protest, intended to highlight racial injustice, quickly became a lightning rod for controversy. The conversation around the sport shifted from touchdowns and tackles to debates about patriotism and protest. This shift felt like a betrayal of what football meant to many fans, including myself.

The Black Lives Matter movement, which aimed to address systemic racism and police brutality, unfortunately sparked backlash that set back progress for Black rights in some ways. The politicization of football mirrored this pattern, turning a unifying sport into a divisive battleground.

When Entertainment Took Over

As time passed, football seemed less about the game and more about entertainment. The focus shifted to flashy halftime shows, celebrity appearances, and social media moments. The sport became a product designed to attract viewers with spectacle rather than skill. This commercialization diluted the authenticity I once admired.

The players, coaches, and teams appeared caught between competing demands: perform on the field, entertain off it, and navigate complex political expectations. For many fans, this made the experience less enjoyable and more exhausting.

Choosing Love Over Division

I realized I no longer wanted to invest my time and energy in something that brought frustration and division. Instead, I chose to focus on what truly matters to me: my family. Spending time loving and supporting my wife brings me joy and peace that football no longer provides.

This decision wasn’t about rejecting the issues raised by protests or ignoring social problems. It was about reclaiming my personal happiness and mental space. Sometimes, stepping away is the healthiest choice.

Reflecting on What Matters

Football once united communities and offered a break from everyday worries. Now, it often feels like a reminder of deeper societal conflicts. For me, the game lost its magic when politics overshadowed the sport.

Choosing love over politics means prioritizing connection over conflict. It means finding peace in personal relationships rather than public debates. If you feel overwhelmed by the current state of sports or any other passion, remember that it’s okay to step back and focus on what brings you genuine happiness. - Wolf Witman

For the last two days, I have been following a man named Jorge as he approached his 56th birthday. Not through a résumé. Not through a list of accomplishments. Not through a carefully curated biograph
